Railway Park (Rot Fai)

Cyclists amongst you may already know about Rot Fai park's leafy, three kilometre track and the canoes on the lake and the shady grass have made this park a popular sight for photographers and filmmakers, as well as picnicking couples. But slightly less well known are the public sports facilities on the riverside edge. Nine tennis courts (two of which are clay), a basketball court, three five-a-side football pitches, a sand box volleyball court and a badminton court, all set to the backdrop of gliding grassy knolls, sparse trees and the wide cycling track make this relaxing, green environment a perfect place to meet for some social sport.

In general the quality of the courts on offer in Thailand is very high, the price, however, is occasionally a bit higher than you might expect and most clubs tend to be on the pricey side and often require a year long membership. Tennis here at Rot Fai, however, is 35 baht for an hour, which is astonishingly cheap, and there's no bookings before midday. The courts aren't in perfect condition but considering most other courts charge somewhere between 250-400 baht an hour a few holes shouldn't bother you. All of the other sport facilities mentioned are free to use, the basketball court is in excellent condition and has a seating area along one side, if you're looking for a place to play pick up or you have a group to play with the bucolic surroundings of this park form the perfect setting for an evening game.

The five-a-side pitches are usually busy in the afternoon, they have floodlights and stay open until 8pm, the volleyball and badminton areas are busiest during the day and the area is usually busiest in the evenings. Mainly popular with local Thais but if you turn up with the right gear you'll find if easy to join in with any of the groups, those of you looking to get back into a sport that you've not kept up with since moving to Bangkok will find it very easy to get back into it here.

The easiest way to get there is to get off at Mo Chit BTS and exit on the Chatuchack park side, walk on the main road with the park on your right and follow the road round to the right and carry on up until you see Rot Fai park on your left. Cross the bridge and you'll see a path running alongside the river, follow that path as it leads you through the sports complex.
